What Is Mindfulness?

Mindfulness is a state of mind achieved by focusing your awareness on the present moment. Calmly acknowledging and accepting your feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations. It is now commonly used as a therapeutic technique and has many advocates who it has helped.

1. Be Here Now

Many of the benefits of mindfulness have been scientifically proven. Treatments for Anxiety and Depression often include using mindfulness. This is based on the evidence that being mindful improves your mood and enhances your creativity.

Being Mindful helps to reduce stress and in turn anxiety. It can also make focussing easier as you train your brain to remove distractions and concentrate on one task.

2. Learn To Enjoy Those Little Moments

Mindfulness can help you to slow down, stop rushing, or stop dwelling on the past and start focusing on the present. You will notice you enjoy those little moments much more. Appreciating life will become the norm, because you are actively concentrating on what you are doing in the here and now.

3. Mindfulness As A Way of Life

Knowing the benefits of being mindful is the easy part. Putting mindfulness into practice can be harder.

No one is ever going to be mindful 100% of the time, but there are many ways you can become more mindful during the day. With a little effort you can make mindfulness a way of life.

4. Focus On One Thing At A Time

In our modern society multitasking has become the norm. We bustle around doing several jobs, while planning the next and reflecting on the last. No one can ever live in the moment if they are doing multiple tasks at the same time.

Try to stop doing multiple things at once, and concentrate on one task at a time. Distractions will always be challenging, but with some effort you will find it easier. In time it will become second nature, and you’ll find each task becomes easier when you fully concentrate on it. You may also find the quality of what you do improves.

5. Begin Tour Day The Right Way

This may seem obvious, but if you want to be more mindful, it helps to start your day the right way. Spending a little time meditating helps start the day in a calmer, more focused way. If you are a visual person, focussing on a Mandala may help. Maybe some relaxing music is more helpful for you.

However you do it taking a small amount of time, first thing in the morning, can make your day both more productive and more fulfilling.

6. Be Mindful Of The Food You Eat

Eating on the go has become more and more common in our effort to make the most of each day. Fast food, microwave ovens and ready meals have all played a role in this. Yes, as we all know, it can make things easier, but mindlessly eating in front of the TV or grabbing a snack on your way between tasks is hardly the best way to enjoy your food or make your life more fulfilling.

Preparing even basic food from fresh ingredients will always taste better, and giving yourself time to enjoy the taste will allow you to enjoy each mouthful much more. Instead of suddenly finding you have finished your food without even noticing, you should savour every moment.

7. Take Time To Enjoy Food

We all know that chewing more is beneficial to health, so allow yourself to do that. Feel the texture and taste change as you eat. Allow the aroma of every piece of food to enhance your enjoyment. In no time you will begin to enjoy the process of eating much more.

Turn off the distractions around you like TV or radio. Sit down, maybe set the table, and pay special attention to how your food looks, smells, feels and tastes. Don’t rush, take the time to enjoy it properly.

8. The Tau Of Drinking

The same applies to drinking. It’s easy to drink too much, too quickly. Allow yourself time to enjoy each sip. Whether it’s a cup of tea or a glass of wine, drink it slowly and savour every moment.

9. Mindfulness To Reduce Food Anxiety

Whilst eating mindfully, you will soon find that you are enjoying your food much more.

Mindful eating can also contribute to weight loss and improve digestion. There are several eating and digestive disorders that have been shown to be badly affected by stress and anxiety. Mindfulness can help reduce food anxiety of all kinds.

Use it to your advantage. You will be amazed at the results.

10. Bathe Your Mind

We all have boring jobs to do each day. Turn them into mindfulness rituals. Being mindful can help you turn even the most mindless task into a joy.

With cooking, be aware of the vegetables you are slicing. Listen to the sizzling oil in the pan. Allow the aroma to bathe your mind, washing away any unwanted thoughts.

Be present in the moment. Don’t just rush through each task as fast as possible.

11. A Better Place To Be

You can do this for any household chore.

Even cleaning the windows or doing the laundry will become a positive thing in your life. A part of the daily mindfulness rituals that will allow your life to become a better place to be.

12. Your Body Is Your Temple

When you exercise, appreciate what your body can do. Instead of just wanting your exercise to be over, marvel at the wondrous piece of engineering that your body is. Focus your attention on each movement. Feel how every muscle works. Enjoy the stretching afterwards.

Don’t rush, feel the effect of the chemicals released into your body. Take your time and be aware of your whole body. It is your temple.

13. Nature Is The Best Healer

Being in nature is one of the easiest ways to be mindful in daily life. You might not be able to get deep into the countryside, but nature is everywhere.

We were recently stranded in a lay-by at the side of a Motorway in the middle of the night. Mindfulness allowed us to see the multitude of bugs and plants that surrounded us instead of being bombarded by the noise of the traffic. It made the wait we had much easier to endure.

Even if you have no garden, you will find a little corner of nature somewhere. When you are there, take deep breaths. Feel the fresh air enter and fill your lungs. Listen to the sounds, Look up into the sky and simply watch. Try to spot any birds or other animals. Enjoy the smells. Depending on the weather each day will be differently. Notice everything around you and enjoy it. You will return recharged, with a fresh mind.

14. Listen To Others

A wise old woman once said to me, “you have 2 ears and 1 mouth, use them in those proportions”. I have never forgotten those words

You should actively and genuinely listen to someone with your full attention every day. It is not only mindful, it shows respect and helps understanding. It will also help you build long term relationships, and is a valuable asset in your working life.

The next time you’re chatting to a colleague or loved one, listen carefully. Don’t let your own mind interfering with what you are hearing. Just focus on what they have to say. Lessons can be learnt in the most unlikely situations.

15. Train Yourself To Notice

Being mindful means keeping your mind in the present. The moment you notice that your mind is wondering, you are not being present in the moment. Try to pull your mind back to the present. Train yourself to notice if it wanders. It will soon become second nature.

Incorporating more mindfulness into your everyday life can have surprising results. Finding easy ways to include it in simple tasks means you will spend more hours being mindful. Everyday tasks can then become the solution to challenging situations. You will be amazed as something simple like washing the dishes allows your mind to settle into calmness.

For many, keeping yourself grounded can be challenging, but mindfulness can be included in your daily life quickly and easily. It can help in a multitude of ways and in many different situations. Without it, I simply wouldn’t be the person I am today.

I hope you find these tips useful. For me, they are the easiest way to improve mindfulness in your daily life.
