What is a first-period kit, and why does your daughter need one?

A first period kit is a box of necessities that every girl should have if she gets her period unexpectedly. The items include pads, tampons, underwear and toiletries so your daughter can feel refreshed after the monthly event.

Some girls might be embarrassed to ask their parents for this type of stuff, or they may not know what’s okay to talk about with them. That’s why it is important to teach girls how to make a first period kit before they need one instead of when they’re already experiencing cramps on top of being unprepared!

A first period kit helps prepare your daughter mentally and physically for her cycle; she’ll never forget again if she has supplies handy at all times! No embarrassment required because she can use a kit in the privacy of her own room.

What are the symptoms of a girl’s first period?

A girl’s first period typically starts when they’re anywhere from 11-14 years old. The average age is 12, and girls usually feel something coming on about a week beforehand.

For the first time, she may have mood swings or more emotional than usual before her cycle because of all the hormones fluctuating in her body.

She might also notice spotting or cramping that are signs that it’s about to happen! When girls get their first period, some report back pain and headaches since there is so much going on with your monthly event for the first time.

What to do when your daughter gets her first period

When your daughter gets her first period, make sure she has a clean change of clothes on hand, and you have access to pads or tampons.

It’s also important that parents explain what’s happening in the body and about menstruation before it happens, so girls know what they’re going through.

A girl may be embarrassed by this natural process, but try not to let her feel bad – instead, focus on how proud she can be for becoming a woman! She might want some help with changing herself the first time. If she experiences bleeding on clothes, try to remove any awkwardness by providing extra underwear, clothes, bedsheets.

If your daughter has cramps with her period, try some over-the-counter medication for the pain and let her know it’s normal as well. It might help if you have a heating pad on hand for when she needs it too!

In short, the most important thing you can do when your daughter gets her first period is to make her feel comfortable and supported.

How to make your own first period kit

What should be in a period kit?

It’s important to prepare your daughter for her first period and help her feel comfortable and not embarrassed. A first-period kit is a great way to do that!

Here are some items you should put in the kit:

  • A cute pouch bag to put all of the items inside.
  • A pad, panty liners, tampons, pads with wings (if she prefers them), maxi pads (to sleep on at night), underwear for sleeping in during menstruation.
  • Wipes or baby wipes to clean up any messes after using the toilet.
  • Any added extras

Step one: Pick a pouch bag

Adding a pouch bag to your first-period kit is a great way to make your daughter feel more prepared. It should be a cute bag that she will want and use for the rest of her life. A fabric pouch will do nicely!

The pouch provides a few important functions. It needs to hold some period products and maybe additional clothing items that can also be worn during menstruation. A good size is large enough so the pouch can fit into her backpack or another bag when necessary, but small enough for her to still feel comfortable carrying it with her at school.

HaloVa Toiletry Multifunctional Bag

The HaloVa Toiletry Multifunctional Bag is the perfect bag for your daughters first period kit. It’s durable, waterproof, and folds up into itself for easy storage when not in use. Plus, it has multiple compartments, so you can separate everything by category or even throw everything inside without worrying about getting mixed together.

This toiletry bag will keep everything organized and easily accessible on any trip or vacation!

Loomiloo Pouch Bag

Girls on the go will love this small zippered pouch from Loomiloo. It’s just the right size for toiletries, school supplies or first period kits and features a wide variety of patterns in various sizes.

This bag comes with eight separate compartments so you can organize your belongings perfectly every time! No more digging through the bottom of your handbag.

Prite Small Travel Bag

This cute waterproof bag is the perfect solution for carrying all of your daughters period products. The interior of this bag has a cosmetics organizer with plenty of space. It comes in multiple colours too, so you can choose which one best suits your daughter.

Step two: Choose period products

It’s best to sit down and talk about the different period products with your daughter before you put one in the first-period kit. You want to make sure she’s comfortable with the different options available.

There are a few different options, such as tampons and pads for external use or menstrual cups for internal use.

Encourage your daughter to pick her first period product. Make sure to give her the full range of products, from pads to tampons and beyond. Pads are a common first choice, but they might not be the best one for your daughter.

Help your daughter prepare for her first period by encouraging her to familiarize herself with whatever product she plans to use.

It’s also important to teach girls how to change these items every few hours to not become too uncomfortable from leaks or overflow.

Always Totally Teen Radiant

Girls are always on the go, and sometimes they need to wear their favorite pair of jeans or cute dress that might not be comfortable with a bulky pad.

Always Totally Teen Radiant pads offer up to 100% leak-free protection so you can wear what you want all month long! These incredible sanitary pads offer FlexFoam technology for comfort and absorb 10X their weight, making this the ultimate in pad technology. FlexFoam makes these pads for women incredibly comfortable, and they feel amazingly light, so you hardly notice they’re there. Plus, these pads, designed just for teens, have fun floral prints.

Lena Menstrual Cup

Tampons and pads have been on the market for years, but they aren’t perfect. They can leak, feel uncomfortable and cause issues with your period flow.

Lena Menstrual Cup is a better way to manage periods because it’s reusable and easy to use. You insert it like a tampon, leave it in for up to 12 hours (depending on how heavy your flow), then remove it by pulling the stem out from your vaginal canal. It’s that simple!

Always Radiant Tampons

You don’t want to let your period stop you from living life to the fullest.

Girls and women are getting more active these days, but they’re still being held back by their periods.

Always Radiant tampons give you up to 100% leak-free protection, so there’s no need to be afraid of sweat or humidity during any activity – even swimming! They also have a CleanGrip applicator for incredible comfort and LeakGuard Braid that helps stop leaks before they happen while channelling potential leaks back into the core. For discreet protection on the go, check out TAMPAX Pocket Radiant tampons.

Step three: Add comfortable underwear

Having a first period can be a challenging time. Your daughter may feel uncomfortable with the new products that she’s using, or she may feel embarrassed by the flow of blood.

Try to alleviate these feelings by adding a comfortable pair of underwear that your daughter is already familiar with wearing.

For me personally, I have a few pairs of comfy underwear that I wear when I’m on my period. I like to wear these because they are a little bit thicker and aren’t too tight, so they help with cramps.

Amazon Essentials Women’s Cotton Stretch Bikini Underwear

It’s hard to find a good pair of underwear.

These classic bikini underwear are made from high-quality material that feels soft against your skin while offering medium back coverage for comfort and protection.

Step four: Add feminine wipes

The first time a girl has her period, the signs may not be obvious until it happens. Having some feminine wipes on hand to clean up is always handy.

Toilet paper alone may not be enough to deal with a heavy flow, but feminine wipes are a great way to ensure that your daughter is clean and comfortable.

Feminine wipes will make your daughter feel better, and they are so easy to carry in a backpack or purse when on the go! They can also be used before going into public bathrooms if necessary.

The best feminine wipes include aloe, vitamin E, or tea tree oil – these ingredients help to calm any irritation due to menstruation.

Summer’s Eve Simply Sensitive Cleansing Cloths

The average woman spends about 6 months of her life on her period. This is a lot of time to spend feeling uncomfortable and self-conscious, not to mention that so many women experience painful periods each month.

Using regular toilet paper during your period can irritate sensitive skin, and it’s also hard to clean up afterwards. You want something that will help you feel clean while still being gentle on your delicate lady parts.

Summer’s Eve Simply Sensitive Cleansing Cloths are designed specifically for use during your period or anytime you need extra comfort and care down there. These cloths are PH balanced (so they’re safe for even the most sensitive skin), contain no harsh chemicals, alcohol or perfumes as other feminine wipes do. They’re individually packaged so you can take them with you wherever you go without worrying about leakage or embarrassing odours in public restrooms!

Click here to get the feminine wipes.

Step five: Extras

Now it’s time to add any final touches to the first period kit.

Period cramps can be painful, so it may be useful to add a single dose of an over-the-counter painkiller.

You may also want to include a cup of hot cocoa or tea to help your daughter feel better after she has cramps, and some chocolate is always nice!

Include any other items that you think will make this kit more special and unique.

If you’re really feeling crafty, there’s no limit as long as it helps your daughter stay clean, healthy, and comfortable during her periods!
