It’s a question that has been asked for centuries – does enlightenment happen gradually, or is it something that happens suddenly?

In this blog post, we’ll answer that question and provide our perspective on how enlightenment works.

We hope you find it helpful!

In this post you'll find:

  • Are there different stages of enlightenment?
  • Does enlightenment happen gradually?
  • How can you tell if you’re getting closer to enlightenment?
  • Final thoughts

Are there different stages of enlightenment?

Yes, there are different stages of enlightenment; in fact, there are 3 main stages of enlightenment.

The first stage is called satori, often described as a sudden awakening.

This is when you first realize that there is more to life than what you can see and experience with your physical senses.

You begin to see things from a higher perspective and develop a greater understanding of the world around you.

The second stage is called kensho, characterized by increasing clarity about our true nature.

As we move through kensho, we begin to see the world and ourselves more clearly.

We no longer identify with our thoughts and emotions as much, and we start to see the interconnectedness of all things.

The third and final stage is called bodhi, which is the state of complete awakening.

In bodhi, we are no longer bound by our limited perspective and experience true freedom.

We can see the world as it truly is and lives in harmony with all beings.

These 3 stages of enlightenment are not set in stone, and you may experience them in a different order or intensity.

You may also find that you move back and forth between stages as your understanding evolves.

There is no right or wrong way to experience enlightenment, and each person’s journey is unique.

What is important is that you remain open to the possibility of growth and transformation and trust that the process will unfold in its own perfect way.

Does enlightenment happen gradually?

Yes, enlightenment is usually a gradual process.

It’s not something that happens overnight – it takes time and patience to awaken to your true nature.

That being said, there are moments of sudden insight or revelation that can occur during the journey to enlightenment.

These are often called “aha” moments, and they can be very powerful in shifting your perspective and moving you closer to your goal.

So, while enlightenment is generally a gradual process, there are also moments of sudden realization that can occur along the way.

The most important thing is to stay open to the possibility of growth and transformation and trust that the process will unfold in its own perfect way.

How can you tell if you’re getting closer to enlightenment?

Yes, there are a few signs that you’re getting closer to enlightenment

You’ll likely start experiencing some or all of the following:

  • A greater sense of peace and well-being, regardless of what’s happening in your life.
  • Increased self-awareness and understanding.
  • Less attachment to things that don’t really matter (e.g., money, status, material possessions).
  • More compassion for yourself and others.
  • A deeper connection with the spiritual aspect of life.

Remember, there is no fixed goal or endpoint – the journey is unique for everyone.

So, don’t get too caught up in trying to achieve specific milestones.

Allow yourself to simply be where you are and trust that you’ll get to where you’re going.
